Over Thanksgiving in 2006 I was living in England and going to the National Broadcasting School. It felt strange being in a foreign country and not having the usuals: a holiday break, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, being with the family and gathering around the table to feast, Black Friday, ect… it was just an ordinary day across the pond. Being in England though did not stop me from carrying forth the American tradition – there was at-least a feast!
During Thanksgiving week at the NBS I was doing some research for a project when I came across and old WKRP clip about a Great Turkey Drop. Instantly I was fascinated and laughing at a radio promotion gone bad. (Not just because all the work I was doing happened to be in radio.) The show brought an awesome smile to my face and filled part of the hole for missing the Thanksgiving traditions. Since then, I have made it a yearly tradition to watch the WKRP Turkey’s Away episode to bring in the Thanksgiving spirit.

Last Wednesday turned out to be a true free-form experience when my initial planning took a dive to a technical glitch. Initially I was planning a “summer tunes” show, but I’ve decided to post-pone that till July 7th (Tuesday July 6th at Midnight to Wednesday July 7th at 4AM). However, just because my initial planning last week failed doesn’t mean the show was a loss - because really, how can anyone screw up a free-form show? When the format is wide open, it can be fun to just play whatever the hand may snag.

When you are checking out the archive, you’ll find it didn’t take me long to flub up on the air. Nonetheless, I’ve been really digging the first few tunes I started the show with- the Kotchy & Faithless songs. I’ve also just started to accept the fact that much of my playlists will not only consist of new music, but often have many of the gaps filled with random cuts from the 90’s. This week I tried to avoid many of the slower songs that plagued last week’s playlist… however I totally forgot it was Earth Day and missed pulling some real earthy songs. Stone Soup was “the” perfect way to kick off this Free Form Overnight! (Yes, they are a local group with a MIA website.) I also managed to throw in a song about tax day, however… your going to have to discover which song that is by checking out the archive. (Or you can just google the lyrics to a whole bunch of songs… whichever you fancy.) Also by visiting the archive you’ll find out why the Stone Soup song was a perfect start to the night / early morning and stumble along a really awesome Lost reference I made. Old man winter might have stayed over for an uninvited cup of coffee… but I didn’t let the tunes reflect the situation, I was in summer mode!
