Over Thanksgiving in 2006 I was living in England and going to the National Broadcasting School. It felt strange being in a foreign country and not having the usuals: a holiday break, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, being with the family and gathering around the table to feast, Black Friday, ect… it was just an ordinary day across the pond. Being in England though did not stop me from carrying forth the American tradition – there was at-least a feast!
During Thanksgiving week at the NBS I was doing some research for a project when I came across and old WKRP clip about a Great Turkey Drop. Instantly I was fascinated and laughing at a radio promotion gone bad. (Not just because all the work I was doing happened to be in radio.) The show brought an awesome smile to my face and filled part of the hole for missing the Thanksgiving traditions. Since then, I have made it a yearly tradition to watch the WKRP Turkey’s Away episode to bring in the Thanksgiving spirit.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you have some time and are looking for some fun laughs, gather around the computer or TV and check out Turkey’s Away.

I think Valentines Day is too focused on loving women (yes ladies, we love you… and we love you when its your birthday, mothers day and every whoha day devoted to women.) But I think Valentines Day should more focused on what you personally love, not necessarily who you love. And if you are lucky enough to have a soulmate for the ride, then you get to do a double whammy of celebration. [Okay so this is taking it a little past the line.]
Don’t worry, I’m not going to get all sappy and tell you some romantic story of February 14th pasts. If I was to tell a story though, it would be complete with awkward moments and heart aches! Infact I think the world record for awkward moments is set on Valentines Day each year with people divulging to their crushes that they are madly in love with them [awwkwwaaarrrd]. Somehow everyone seems to get the love bug excitement in their blood stream and it just goes to the head [yes, you can take that in many ways].
As awkward as it can be to divulge a crush, it can be a special moment if you happen to have some luck. Luck which I never seem to have. Ever. [Actually I can't think of when I ever had said luck.] However, It would please me to no end if I were able to give one of those jumbo valentines day cards [especially if I get an oversized phone or something out of the deal!] [oversized props are cool btw]. I just have this rule that things have to happen naturally and mutually [so there might have been a few bad experiences in the past] and pushing things because its a holiday just isn’t my style. Nor is just going out and pulling a random girl in for some coffee after the club my cup of tea [I'm not easy & I have weird standards]. I know I’m strange and probably under use my pimp switch. [And now I have rambled off topic.]
[And continuing off topic, but on par for the v-day...] Ofcourse, I went online to find a tasteful British lingo site so I could link the “pull” and “coffee” above to a decent set of definitions and google came up with:
2009 started out by keeping me fairly occupied – especially the first week back at work, thus for this reason I am wishing everyone now a belated Happy New Year! Although in my defense, I still had 352 days to get that out.
So why was I excited for 2009 to begin? First off, I love living in the present, as much as I enjoy staying in certain moments or reliving certain times, I look forward to the future be it good or not. So by natural enthusiasm I was excited for New Years! A trip to NYC to hang out with some friends might have added to the excitement. Also take into consideration Scrubs returning last week and Lost coming back next week! Lost! Yes, I am ready for that to begin! I’m also looking forward to hanging out and seeing some cool people and friends this year.
Another exciting thing for 2009 is the start of my weekly radio gig! It will be four hours of audio anarchy with yours truly every Tuesday at Midnight (EST) to Wednesday at 4AM (EST). I’m not exactly sure on what the usual weekly format will be, but expect Remixes, Mashups, Alternative, Indie and Alternative Rock, along with some unground asian beats and electronic music. It’ll be a nice four hour eclectic mix on WYEP. If for some reason you value sleep, there may be a useful podcast available in the radio section… just email me for a password.
With that… I’ve had a certain song stuck in my head recently, one that is better not to mention. However, this parody describes it all to well. From it’s radio debut in December of 2008…. “It’s Been Ten Years Since.”
First, I’ll start by dedicating this video to everyone who has wanted to throw something at Bush. Lets pretend each shoe is for something on your list.
Ofcourse, Bush gave the facts… and apparently flying shoes is not that threatening. For me though… when shoes fly, I’ll be gone. It is nice to know though there are 20 men willing to rush out of a small door from behind the president to save him from flying shoes.
So at least remember that when you want to throw something at the president, tell him your cause!
Now for everyones favorite water cooler topic, the weather:
What are the chances of TWO posts in a row about the weather being above 50 degrees? SLIM seeing as it is the middle of December! That’s right, Pittsburgh is in another heat wave. Once again it warmed up and I celebrated today by washing my truck (outside without freezing my hands) and then Christmas-tizing the grandma’s house with lights. Afterwards, it was an exciting two minute end to the Steelers surprising victory.
Tomorrow is looking to be up around 56 again, which will be perfect for walking around and covering the stuff on my shopping list.
It’s strange… Christmas is literally right around the corner, yet I still feel like it is in the distance and this warm weather isn’t helping. I know it’s not though because iCal is kindly reminding me of the little time I have left to finish everyones home brewed Christmas gifts. My goal is to have the gifts done before Christmas eve this year. We’ll see though…
Turkey season is over and that means it’s time for the December madness to begin! I fire things off in a true disc-jockey manor at a holiday party this Friday. Looks like the weather will be getting things in the mood all week. !!
Afterward, it’s onward to baking records and the holiday shenanigans.
As we celebrate today with good friends, family, food and fireworks it is important to not forget why we observe this historic day. Too often I feel we loose sight of why we fought for our independence over 232 years ago… and with current politics, we could easily loose everything that we fought for.
As Ben Franklin said, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little tempory safety, Deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
Here are some flags from around the yard with my new purchase.
Sit back, relax and turn on live independence. Most of all, have a fun, safe and happy Forth of July!
